London Theatres Free Walking Tour
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet in front of the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. Once we're all gathered, we'll kick off this guided walking tour of London's West End, where you'll uncover the backstage secrets of famous actors, directors, set designers, architects, and iconic shows that have shaped British theatre. You're in for theatrical magic at every turn!
First, we'll head to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, London's oldest theatre site. We'll tell you all about its tales of drama, royalty, and even some spooky rumours. Then, we'll go to the Lyceum Theatre, which was once the home of Bram Stoker. Today, the theatre is where the famous musical The Lion King is performed.
Next, we'll set off to the Savoy Theatre, where we'll stop to discuss the pioneering work of Richard D'Oyly Carte, which led to the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. This theatrical partnership laid the groundwork for today's world-famous musical scene!
Our next stop on this walking tour will be the Vaudeville Theatre, where you'll find out about the tragic event that happened due to a feud between actors. We'll then stop outside the elegant Garrick Theatre, which specialised in melodrama during its early years.
Afterwards, we'll admire St. Martin's Theatre, home to Agatha Christie's record-breaking The Mousetrap. Our walking tour will lead us to Shaftesbury Avenue, the very heart of Theatreland, where you'll see more of London's most famous theatres.
This walking tour of London's West End will conclude outside His Majesty's Theatre, near Trafalgar Square. This theatre is the very lair of The Phantom of the Opera, Andrew Lloyd-Webber's most successful musical. We'll say our goodbyes here after 2 hours of learning about the origins of the West End. So long, farewell!
